[mood |sardonic]

I got laid off friday afternoon, sadly my employers failed to budget for a new year so I have to look for new work... just about had them broken in too, what a shame.

I'll get glowing references from this job (of six months) so it's not all in vain

So if anyone knows of a job out there for a very eclectic and inventive guy please let me know before all my money runs out.(soon)

OK, I'm bored and nosey, and this is fun to do. Just read the "offense" and if you've done it, you owe that fine. Keep going until you've read each "offense" and added up your total fine. Title your bulletin "My Bar Tab is $..." You don't have to confess your answers, just the amount of your fine. I'm flying up to the Portland area to help my brother pack up and liquidate assets for his move to Ireland at least four days. Fun, fun. organizing other people is so much easier than organizing my own stuff.

When I get back I really need to get a job, really!! So if anyone knows of handyman or building engineer positions that are open drop me a line.

I'm kind of enjoying this current cluster of tremors and unless they're preshocks to the big one kind of like burping your tires just to set up a real peal out. I hope to enjoy a few more before I leave leave for the Matsonia on the 28th.

I vote for relief of pressure as a good thing. But something tells me that the republicans need a disaster to distract from the troop movements and provide for a contrast to Katrina's FEMA response.  I'd prefer to be wrong about that.

Regardless, I'll be going on a little trip and will be back in two months. I'll have my cell phone and will be reachable every three days or so while in Longbeach or mid-Pacific.

very cool

when people say that war helps advance tech you have to wonder what it sqelches in the process.

When you're at war you see every opportunity to smash the enemy's skull and culture as an advancement of your goals.

We got an incredible tech boost out of the space race and only a handful of people got killed in the process. peaceful tech competition beats war any day.

new discovery of old tech, Antikythera Mechanism. so frickin' cool. if we could just stop warring ourselves into DUMB, our species could do so much. they had this 2000 years ago, yo!

"A phenomenon called group glee was studied in videotapes of 596 formal lessons in a preschool. This was characterized by joyful screaming, laughing, and intense physical acts which occurred in simultaneous bursts or which spread in a contagious fashion from one child to another. A variety of precipitating factors were identified, the most prevalent being teacher requests for volunteers, unstructured lags in lessons, gross physical-motor actions, and cognitive incongruities."

allergies; contagious? in your head? compelling evidence is lacking but doubts linger. [Jun. 21st, 2006|04:42 am]
Good god,

I've been told that allergies aren't contagious, but I've also been told that they are all in my head.

I don't believe the second (but if true, i wouldn't would I?)
However, the first is coming into question.

Can you bone up on allergies or catch them from a significant other?
Are allergies curable or only treatable?

This comes up this morning after recovering from "routine allergy testing" essential allergens from grasses and tree pollens were sparingly applied to my arm by one of the leading experts on allergies, Dr. Nsouli, witnessed by Michele(my SO), Mary and Liz. (M's friends) After applying single drops from samples by syringe he gently scratched the protective upper epidermis under each drop. A little harder as michele got him laughing.
What we all expected was two or three flareups from the twenty allergens being tested. The test normally takes twenty min and you're supposed to get a little red welt or bump. Medical tests are the ones that you want to fail and I got a solid B. 16 out of 20 is 80% by most calculations. I was feeling fine except that I started to itch a little at a couple of sites, and then a couple more. Michele started to worry sooner than I did, I think it was at the five min mark that my armpit and the backs of my fingers started itching and tingling. the second shot of epinephrine (sp) left me a little jittery 60 mg steroids, a meal, anti nausea pill and some restless bed-rest later I feel normalish if still a bit queasy.

Jade kicked ass in her driving lesson [Jun. 13th, 2006|10:19 pm]
Jade kicked ass in her driving lesson today, only two things that remotely endangered the car or other drivers were respectively driving over a pile of dirt that made a resounding clatter and shook up the exhaust assembly (I misjudged the height and ORDERED her to drive over it) and slowing down while merging into a lane.(accellerating to maintain relative position is counterintuitive)

That was in nearly three hours of intense aggressive training. She progressed from; 5MPH uncertainty to confident awareness of car space, over correcting steering to one handed whipping around turns with a crisp refocusing, book knowledge of driving to a much more real paranoia about other drivers that will serve her well.

Two more lessons and she'll be ready to set her appointment with the DMV at least with an automatic.

She can't do a bootlegger yet, but I was having a hard time getting anything near a crisp one out of my '90 station-wagon today. She's more confident backing into a parking spot than driving forward into one. I stood at the corner of an adjacent stall to represent the rear fender of a parked car. She kept missing me so I guess she still likes me.

The final excercise we did was a slolom (sp) around a line of four lightposts in reverse at over 15MPH.

Niece and nephew coming over [Jun. 13th, 2006|08:44 am]
Rez (my sister) and Cal (my brother-in-law) might be coming down and dropping off their kids Quinn and Shea for an overnight on friday. it's been 6 months since I've seen any of the O'Greenivans (O'Sullivan and Greenwood) it should be nice, and Michele and I will get our semi-annual kid fix/inoculation to boot.

I tend to shower Shea with a bit more attention than I do Quinn, so I'm going to stay aware of keeping a balance Michele will keep me in line about that.

They're getting to the age that throwing them over my shoulder and spinning around isn't quite so exciting and fun for them anymore so I'd better break out some Nichi and put away the monkey bars so that we can have some intellectually stimulating conversation.

Last Sunday our roommate moved out and finally paid up for her previous month's rent and her utilities since January.

She used her cleaning deposit as her last month of rent and is presumably off to Kentucky before she gets too late in her pregnancy to fly.

My already tight budget is bursting at the seams with both higher rent and unexpected expenditures. I nearly choked last night looking at my bank balance. Time to shake the money tree, shake it again, turn in a budget to Sean and get a qualified internship. whoo hoo!!!

I ran into a guy from Ireland yesterday on BART going into the city. He was heading to the airport and Michele and I got him on the right train. We started discussing Ireland's educational support system and their subsequent rise in economic stature and comparing the US decline in higher education as a standard.[edit: Jump to new subject in conversation] Jumpstart International [Sean's NGO] came up and he was familiar with it. It sometimes blows me away that by brother's work seems to have reached a level of sparse world recognition.

allrightie, back to work.

I was wondering what was bugging me. I've been getting more and more wound up and Michele reminded me why.

http://www.courttv.com/onair/shows/body_of_evidence/560.html

The show about my oldest brother's case is on tonight no wonder I can hardly breathe it's been over six and a half years but it still throws me to think about it. It probably always will.

I remember sitting with my family as sentence was passed on the man that strangled my brother to death and watching this face stare blankly at the floor.

Intellectually I know that the death penalty is ineffective in inhibiting crime, on the other hand...

Back to work.
